Preserving Heritage, Building the Future!

Every year on August 9, we celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

On this day in 1982, the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations took place, marking the beginning of systematic efforts to protect their rights.

Yugra is considered the ancestral homeland of indigenous small‑numbered peoples. Languages and customs are particularly vulnerable, and our shared task is to do everything possible to preserve them.

YuSU hosts the Center for the Peoples of the North, which carries out extensive work to study, promote, and pass on historical and cultural heritage among students and young people. Our students from among the indigenous small‑numbered peoples actively participate in research and creative projects, keeping their national identity alive.

Since September 2024, a continuing education program has been launched at YuSU. Graduates of schools from among the indigenous small‑numbered peoples of the North now have the opportunity to take free preparatory courses and successfully enter the university. This is a step towards enabling young people to receive a quality education while staying connected to their roots.
