Summer molecular school for biologists

Summer goes on. At least for biologists who have come to master molecular methods of biodiversity research at the Yugra State University station in Shapsha, where the Youth Molecular Genetic Laboratory of the University is located. Advanced training courses for scientists-biologists of Yugra will be held here all week long. As Roman Kuchin, Rector of Yugra State University, noted, our okrug is a unique land where you can turn all your dreams into reality.

"Our field station and laboratory in Shapsha are proof of that. Elena Lapshina has created a productive research team around her, which resulted in the creation of such a new scientific direction. Nina Filippova, a world-class researcher, actively joined this work and realized her idea - create a youth laboratory within the framework of the national project "Science and Universities". In the laboratory it is possible to conduct genetic research at the modern level. The most valuable thing is that here we managed to gather leading researchers from all over Russia to implement the molecular school. I would like to wish the participants of the school success in their scientific discoveries, not to stop at what has been achieved, and to continue our cooperation. We are open and always ready for dialog and cooperation", - welcomed the young scientists Rector of YuSU Roman Kuchin.

"I wish the attendees of the Molecular School successful work, have courage, involve young people in this work. This is a new era for biology. The methods that you will study these days will be the basis of scientific research, they are the future", - said Elena Lapshina, Director of the UNESCO Research Center Chair "Environmental Dynamics and Global Climate Change" to the young researchers.

For her part, the head of the school, Head of the Youth Molecular Genetic Laboratory of Yugra State University Nina Filippova introduced the attendees to the stationary, told how the Youth Laboratory appeared and the idea of conducting a molecular school was born. Thus, the Yugra Mushroom Museum, children's carbon polygon, working areas for students and scientists who come to study local landscapes are located at the Yugra State University station in Shapsha. There are also several laboratories, collections of biological samples are stored here, and work is carried out to study them using modern molecular methods.

"Our laboratory was created in 2021. Now 13 employees are working here. We are mastering the methods of molecular genetic analysis to study the systematics, diversity, and revision of microorganisms in our region. We are including the 2nd and 3rd generation sequencing, which allows not only to describe systematics, but also the diversity of the whole community in ecosystems, to conduct metabarcoding", - said Nina Vladimirovna.

For the second year in a row, the molecular school is supported by a grant from the Governor of Yugra. We recall that the first school, which was called "Barkoding for the study of protection and biodiversity of Yugra", was held in July 2022.

This year, 35 young scientists wished to study in laboratories equipped with modern standards, and more than 20 participants were selected. For them the school will become an excellent platform for further scientific cooperation, because young scientists represent ten different organizations - YuSU, Khanty-Mansiysk Medical Academy, Surgut State University, SurGPU, NVSU, Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park, Kondinskiye Lakes named after A.F.Stashkevich, EcoTestServis LLC. A.F. Stashkevich, EcoTestService LLC (Nizhnevartovsk), V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and St. Petersburg National Research Academic University named after J.I. Alfyorov of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The lecturers of the School are experienced specialists in the field of molecular genetic methods from YuSU and collaborating organizations from other cities of Russia.

In addition to lectures on introduction to molecular methods of study, young scientists are expected to do practical work in laboratories, where the school participants will isolate nucleic acids, conduct polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis and sequencing. The researchers will also analyze the results obtained and publish molecular sequences on data portals - GenBank, GBIF, BOLD.

"In school, I will be able to enhance my skills to further research polymorphisms. It's working with the human genome. I will also gain skills in the field of sequencing. The study here is accessible. And it is nice that it takes place in our region. I already know some of the participants personally, which is a great bonus for building relationships," said Viktor Maltsev from SurGPU, a participant of the Molecular School.

"I applied to participate in the school to gain the necessary experience for further work at my university, where I study and work," said Maria Safronova from SurGU.

"Actively developing molecular genetic methods in biology presuppose modern equipment of laboratories, which are open in a small number of institutions in the region and are not always available. The scientific platform on the basis of the recently organized Youth Laboratory in YuSU will provide an opportunity to undergo training, learn from experience and start cooperation with colleagues in this field", - says the head of the school, Head of the Youth Molecular Genetic Laboratory of YuSU Nina Filippova.
