The first RGS youth club in Yugra

Uniting the young, talented and interested. The youth club of the Russian Geographical Society was created at YuSU, and became the first in our okrug. The initiative was taken by the Higher Ecological School of YuSU. As Rector Roman Kuchin noted, this is indeed a significant event for the university. RGS and YuSU outlined a work plan for 2024, which was signed by Roman Kuchin and Mikhail Savchenko, Chairman of the Regional Branch of RGS.

"Our university actively cooperates with the RGS. We have been actively collaborating with RGO for more than two years now. Every year we co-organise the geographical dictation, which is very popular not only among students, but also among residents of the whole city. The opening of the RGS Youth Club at the University will help students to broaden their horizons, expand their creative potential and express themselves in such areas as geography, cartography and ecology. Knowledge of geography and history is what increases our basic cultural level and allows us to better understand the world around us. The children will be able to study the geographical diversity of the regions and take part in scientific research and expeditions," Roman Viktorovich emphasised.

Alexander Novyukhov, Senator of the Russian Federation, First Vice-President of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of Russia, and Artur Latypov, Director of the Regional Development Department of RGS, joined the meeting via video link.

"The main point is that young people have become the flagship of a movement of new projects that allow us to rediscover our region, the magnificent territories we are exploring today. And, in fact, thanks to today's project, we have opened a new platform to empower young people to explore nature paths. I am sure that this beginning that was made today is a big serious step towards the realisation of joint projects. Good luck!" - Russian Senator Alexander Novyukhov welcomed the participants.

"I am convinced that the opening of the youth club will give a new round of interaction with RGS, a society that has a unique 180-year history. The society has such a huge potential that every member of the youth club will find a use for it. Good journey and go forward!" - said Artur Latypov.

We would like to add that Daria Bibikova, a specialist of the Higher School of Ecology, became the head of the RGS Youth Club at YuSU: "I am convinced that the creation of the club will provide additional opportunities for realising the potential of the youth of our region and will become a place where everyone interested and willing to learn new things will have an opportunity to visit the most picturesque parts of our beautiful country, to study deeper its history, to preserve the historical, cultural and spiritual greatness of our land".

Darya Mikhailovna told that the purpose of the youth club was to unite and ensure practical participation of active schoolchildren, students, representatives of working youth, young scientists in educational, research, nature protection and local history activities, as well as the development of volunteer and public initiative. In addition, the head gave a detailed description of one of the most interesting and exciting directions of the youth club: "Expedition direction, which gives invaluable experience, indelible impressions for all young people. We will take part in expeditions, learn basic skills of hiking. We will plan further exploration, particularly of the Subpolar Urals".

At the end of the meeting, Tatyana Antyufeeva, Head of the Higher Ecological School, spoke. She cited a famous expression of the ancient geographer, philosopher Strabo, who said that geography is the science of happiness to live. "Geography is a worldview, it is something we meet every day. And I am sure, if you join our wonderful world of geographical research, your life will become even more interesting, rich and give new wonderful opportunities", - emphasised Tatyana Valeryevna.
