YuSU hosted the Autumn School of Journalism

What role does journalism play in today's world? What do journalists and bloggers have in common? What is news? What is the peculiarity of working on camera?

Yugra State University hosted the Autumn School of Journalism "A Step into a Profession" for schoolchildren in grades 9-11.

The program was designed for three days and took place at the Higher School of Humanities.

At the seminars, participants not only learned a lot about journalism, but also tried themselves as journalists and prepared their own materials, which could be submitted to the competition held within the School in the nominations "Best Note", "Best Performance on Camera", "Best Blog".

"When children do not have such profession-oriented events, it is very difficult for them to decide on a profession. At this age, schoolchildren do not know where to go next, what subjects to take at the USE, what university to choose. Then it turns out that children, having entered the university, realize by the senior course that they have chosen the wrong sphere of work. That is why our task is to familiarize them with journalism, give them an opportunity to try themselves in print and television, show them how editors' offices work and help them decide on their future profession," said Ilya Tarasov, Head of Journalism.

Roman Kuchin, Rector of the University, welcomed the participants of the Autumn School and noted that journalism is one of the leading fields in our region today. Students of YuSU, always find a job and not only in our region, but also beyond its borders: "Journalism is now changing, transforming, new formats are emerging. Perhaps this event will help high school students to make a choice and they will join the student ranks of our university. Even if they don't choose journalism, the skills acquired during the intensives will be useful for them in any field. I would also like to note that YuSU provides all the opportunities for students to express themselves to the maximum!".

Natalia Filimonova, Vice Head of the Higher School of Humanities, emphasized the significance of the event: "We have a unique opportunity to unite the creative intellectual potential of schoolchildren, students and teachers. The Autumn School of Journalism gives a real chance to express themselves, talk about their ideas, get new skills, and share experience. I wish the participants productive work and further success".

Olesya Vershinina, Senior Professor at the Higher School of Humanities, Journalism, noted that the Autumn School "Step into Profession" exceeded all expectations: "This is such a test drive for us. We tried to understand how much future applicants need such meeting formats, and how many young people are really interested in the profession. The reality exceeded our expectations. We expected a more modest result. The feedback from schoolchildren is positive. For them it is a cool opportunity to look at the profession from the inside and make a decision about choosing a place for the next level of education. The participants learned how to write notes, learned the secrets of TV journalists' skills The competition was held in an online format. Guys were very good. We immediately recognized the most motivated and active ones. Of course, there is still work to be done. The autumn school of journalism showed us that we need more resources for the Spring Festival of School Media, but these are all solvable tasks that we will cope with 100%.
