Finno-Ugric studies include a comprehensive study of Finno-Ugric peoples, their folklore, literature, history and ethnography. The territory of  Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous okrug (region) - Yugra is historically associated with the formation and development of two Finno-Ugric nations: Khanty and Mansi. For over a century it has been a home for a group of the Finno-Ugric people - Zyryan Komi, as well as the relatives of the Finno-Ugric peoples - the Nenets. The origin of the Finno-Ugric studies in our region has gone a difficult way from external researches, based on the materials from scientific expeditions (when scientists from different fields: linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnographers did a huge work on a comprehensive study of the Ob-Ugrian), then - to the appearance of  small research centres, where research was conducted by the Finno-Ugric people representatives themselves (who are thus made a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the language and culture of the native people), to the formation of a big scientific center in Yugra State University - Institute of Language, history and Culture of peoples of Yugra. Now it has become the Center of Northern Peoples.

Yugra State University is a member and a chair (in 2019-2021) of the International Association of Finno-Ugric Universities.
