International Scientific and Practical Conference "Ensuring the Protection of the Interests of Indigenous Peoples in the Modern World"

On 2 April, Yugra State University hosted the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Ensuring the Protection of the Interests of Indigenous Minorities in the Modern World".

The aim was to formulate recommendations to improve the current legislation on the protection of the rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of representatives of small indigenous minorities of the North, as well as law enforcement practice in this area.

The event was attended by representatives of educational and scientific institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, human rights, law enforcement and judicial bodies, state and municipal authorities of Yugra and other subjects of the Russian Federation, graduate students, undergraduates, students and ordinary listeners.

At the sections "Law enforcement and human rights activities to protect the interests of small indigenous minorities in Russia and abroad"; "Criminal and legal regulation of the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of small indigenous minorities", "Tribune of young scientist" discussed the issues of protection of the rights, freedom and legitimate interests of representatives of small indigenous minorities of the North, analysis of the current national and foreign legislation, as well as international law to determine the status of a representative of small indigenous minorities of the North.

At the Round Table "Innovative corpus technologies in the study and preservation of indigenous languages in the modern world" for the first time in the university discussed the issues of modern corpus linguistics and language preservation. The guest of the conference was Vladimir Plungian, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, doctor of philological sciences, head of the typology section of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The participants shared the experience of the pilot project "National Corpus of Mansi Language", discussed possible strategies for the creation and development of corpus technologies for Ob-Ugric languages for non-commercial use for research and educational purposes, both in Russia and abroad. The participants proposed to initiate the development of a pilot innovative project "National Corpus of Khanty language", as well as to create a corpus manager with unique features, in addition to the standard search with concordance output, for the languages of the indigenous minorities of the North.
