Rector of YuSU became a member of the new Council of the Russian Union of Rectors

On 4 July, Lomonosov Moscow State University hosted the Congress of the Russian Union of Rectors, which was attended by presidents and rectors of 617 Russian universities. Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the attendees with a welcoming speech, emphasising that the higher education system is our powerful intellectual resource: "It is important that universities, academies, institutes build up their scientific potential, become a place for fundamental and applied research, development of breakthrough technologies, real intellectual engines for strategic sectors of the economy. And of course, it is necessary to support talented, enterprising scientists, teachers and mentors, both Russian and foreign, and to create such conditions that they seek to work in our universities".

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, noted: "In accordance with the new Presidential Decree on national development goals, higher education should be aimed at realising the potential of every person. It is especially important to help young people build a career in science, technology and technological entrepreneurship. This task is enshrined in the updated Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of Russia. Last month, the head of state approved 7 priority areas of scientific and technological development and 28 most important science-intensive technologies. Training qualified specialists for the development and accelerated introduction of such technologies into the economy is a priority for the Government. Undoubtedly, a great contribution is made by the initiatives of the Decade of Science and Technology, which provide for the involvement of scientific organisations and universities in solving the most important tasks facing science".

President of the Russian Union of Rectors, Rector of Moscow State University Academician Viktor Sadovnichy presented a report on the activities of the Russian Union of Rectors. The head of the Union highly appreciated the role of the rector corps in overcoming the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, maintaining the stability of the educational process, and adapting to the challenges of forced digitalisation. The Union's activity is even more significant in the conditions of growing instability and tension of the geopolitical situation in the world, building a model of university education that would ensure scientific and technological sovereignty of the country. According to Victor Anatolievich, such a model should be based on the advantages of the domestic education system, meet the needs of the state, the level of scientific and technological development of society.

The new members of the Council and the Board of the Russian Union of Rectors were also approved. Academician Viktor Sadovnichy, Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, was re-elected as President of the RUR by unanimous decision. The new Council includes 86 heads of universities, including the rector of Yugra State University Roman Kuchin.

"The Russian Union of Rectors is an all-Russian public organisation uniting more than 700 heads of higher education organisations, which makes a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the basic principles of the national education system. Being part of the Council is a great honour for me!", - Roman Viktorovich commented on his election.
