Rector of YuSU participates in the XIII China-Russia Arctic Forum

Rector of Yugra State University takes part in the XIII Sino-Russian Arctic Forum, which is held in Qingdao, China. The theme of the event is “Sino-Russian Arctic Cooperation”, which aims to deepen exchange and cooperation between universities and research institutes of both sides, as well as jointly promote the development of scientific research in the Arctic.

In recent years, the Arctic region has become an important area for the global world order due to its unique geographical location and rich natural resources. As Arctic stakeholders and major Arctic countries, China and Russia take on the important mission of maintaining peace and stability in the Arctic and promoting regional cooperation and sustainable development.

Roman Kuchin spoke about the role of Yugra State University in the climate agenda.

Despite the complex geopolitical situation, the main task of modern society is to ensure sustainable development to create favorable conditions for economic growth and improve the quality of life of the population. Today, a number of strategic documents of the Russian Federation, including the Strategy of Socio-Economic Development of Russia until 2050, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, set the task of achieving carbon neutrality and reducing the carbon intensity of the national economy. Thus, since 2024, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra has been implementing the Climate Economy project aimed at achieving the goals of the Climate Doctrine of the Russian Federation.

Yugra State University has always been an active participant of the climate agenda. Strategic projects and development program of the university meet the objectives of the new Climate Doctrine and the challenges of technological development and are aimed at innovative and applied implementation of the accumulated scientific competencies, participation in the largest federal and regional research projects in the field of greenhouse gas flux monitoring, assessment of carbon balance of forest-marsh complexes of the middle taiga of Western Siberia, biodiversity and creation of geographic information systems (GIS).

“With the support of the Yugra Government and industrial partners, Yugra State University is implementing a regional project to create a regional system for monitoring greenhouse gas flows and an international center for the assessment and verification of carbon units “Carbon Data Center.” The university here faces the most important task of training highly qualified personnel”, - Roman Viktorovich noted.

The university implements bachelor's degree programs “Environmental Protection and Rational Use of Natural Resources” and master's degree programs “Carbon Regulation under Climate Change” and “Environmental Management in the Oil and Gas Region”. In addition, the university implements additional educational programs aimed at the formation of primary competencies among children and youth on the basis of a children's carbon polygon. Special attention is also paid to project activities of students with the involvement of industrial and scientific partners, for example, the creation of a separate waste collection system together with the solid municipal waste operator “Yugra-Ecology”.

“Such international meetings play an important role in strengthening scientific ties between countries, universities. Everyone makes a significant contribution to the common cause”, - commented the Rector of YuSU.
