The city of Khanty-Mansiysk hosted the Ugra Economic Forum, one of the region's major events of international level. Its main feature this year was that the YEF became the largest carbon neutral business event in Yugra with confirmed verification. This happened for the first time in the region and was made possible thanks to the climate projects of the oil and gas chemical company SIBUR, which donated its carbon units to offset the carbon footprint of the event.
The Forum's carbon footprint amounted to 31.012 tons of CO2-eq and was offset by the results of SIBUR's climate project implemented at ZapSibNeftekhim. The Forum's carbon footprint was calculated by the Carbon Data Center of Ugra State University with the support of the Climate Initiative Association. The calculations were verified by Ecopolis Certification and Service, a strategic partner and official representative in Russia of international verifiers from Qatar “PES”, India “Enviance” and international expert network from Germany Verico SCE.
“The development strategy of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug on the one hand prioritizes the development of manufacturing industry - oil and gas engineering, metallurgy and oil and gas chemistry. On the other hand, it pays great attention to the initiatives of environmental conservation and solving the tasks of reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions within the framework of the new Climate Doctrine of the Russian Federation. Therefore, I consider it significant that SIBUR ensured the carbon neutrality of the Yugra Economic Forum, which was held at a high international level,” said Sergey Afanasiev, Deputy Governor, Director of the Yugra Economic Development Department.
