Finno-Ugric studies include a comprehensive study of Finno-Ugric peoples, their folklore, literature, history and ethnography. The territory of  Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous okrug (region) - Yugra is historically associated with the formation and development of two Finno-Ugric nations: Khanty and Mansi. For over a century it has been a home for a group of the Finno-Ugric people - Zyryan Komi, as well as the relatives of the Finno-Ugric peoples - the Nenets. The origin of the Finno-Ugric studies in our region has gone a difficult way from external researches, based on the materials from scientific expeditions (when scientists from different fields: linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnographers did a huge work on a comprehensive study of the Ob-Ugrian), then - to the appearance of  small research centres, where research was conducted by the Finno-Ugric people representatives themselves (who are thus made a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the language and culture of the native people), to the formation of a big scientific center in Yugra State University - Institute of Language, history and Culture of peoples of Yugra. Now it has become the Institute of the Northern Peoples (started in 2013).

Yugra State University collaborates with International Association of Finno-Ugric Universities.
